Liverpool

Two eyes
spied
from behind a sign
which read "Liverpool"
but didn't mean anything.
The same eyes sauntered down
now unfamiliar streets
Heavy-lidded, sometimes closed
they followed my hands
as I paid at the bar.
Early in the morning
-now lined
and grey -
they watched in the rear-view mirror;
screwed up in a question
(but it was only a gesture).
And, disbelieving, they looked on
as I searched for some change;
finding only a small piece of the city
wedged in my purse.
